A Presentation of Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods
SATURDAY: This week we try again, with a show postponed by the end of the baseball season. In the opening and closing, we catch up with Jeff Vallone and exec chef Michael Dei Maggi in the dining room of Montrose’s new Caffe Bello. Many bloggers keep weighing in on the pros and cons of this concept – this semi-sibling to the Vallone family’s more traditional Ciao Bello. We talk face-to-face with the people making it happen. We also taste our way through the wines of Pietra Santa from California, discussing each one with the winemaker himself. He produces some nifty olive to oil while he’s at it.
SUNDAY: This show comes from New Orleans and features what has to be the hottest new restaurant in town. Chef Dominique Macquet, long a favorite of traveling Texans for his namesake restaurant in the French Quarter, has reinvented himself – smaller scaled, more affordable, more committed to comfort than cutting edge. And it’s all taking place in the city’s quieter Uptown section. We love the new Dominique’s on magazine. We also happen to love New Orleans rum, so we find our way into a seriously rundown neighborhood to taste some at its source.
